Innovative Financing for the Adaptation Fund: Pathways and Potentials

The Adaptation Fund has emerged as an important body in the multilateral adaptation finance landscape. It has pioneered novel approaches such as direct access, has streamlined project cycles to allow participation of small institutions and holds an impressive track-record of delivering results-based adaptation finance. Demand for its services is high among vulnerable developing countries. Continued interest was clearly visible during COP 22, where Parties showed willingness to carve a role for this Kyoto Protocol climate fund under the Paris Agreement. However, this potential is constrained by a continuous resource crunch in the Fund after its primary revenue source – a 2% share of proceeds levy from mitigation projects registered under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) - dried up. >> more

Report on the 28th meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board

The Adaptation Fund Board successfully concluded its 28th Meeting in Bonn, Germany from 4–7 October 2016 only a month before the twenty-second session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) which will be held in Marrakech, Morocco. The meeting encouraged reflections on how to fully enhance dissemination of knowledge and experiences generated by the Fund in order to leverage the understanding about its relevance and contributions to adaptation efforts of nations and communities worldwide facing the adverse effects of climate change. >> more

Regional Hub Workshop for the Southern African Region

On the 13th of September 2016, Indigo Development & Change (South Africa) organized a workshop to launch the Southern African Regional Hub under the Adaptation Fund NGO Network. The goal of the regional hub is to support civil society and government actors in Southern Africa in processes regarding the Adaptation Fund (AF). The Regional Hub will also take over the role of encouraging members of the AF NGO Network in Southern Africa to participate in AF NGO Network activities. Similar Regional Hubs will be set up in East Africa, West Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and Asia/Pacific over the next years. Briefing on the 28th meeting of the Adaption Fund Board

In August 2016, the Adaptation Fund has recorded its second largest number of proposals in its history. A number of 31 concept and project proposals have been received to be considered by the Adaptation Fund Board at its 28th Meeting scheduled in October 2016 in Bonn, Germany. This request amounts to US$ 208.6 million from various types of accredited implementing entities wishing to access the funds. It is obvious that the Fund provides an important function to assist developing countries in their efforts towards concrete local measures against climate impacts. Developed through a civil society lens, this briefing outlines selected talking points on agenda items that are to be discussed at the 28th meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board, and suggests some key recommendations as well. >> more

Regional Hub Workshop for South East Asia

On the 12th and 13th of August 2015, the NGO Forum on Cambodia organized a workshop to launch the South East Asia Regional Hub under the Adaptation Fund NGO Network. The goal of the regional hub is to support civil society and government actors in South East Asia in processes regarding the Adaptation Fund (AF).
